  • to depict moving objects (e.g. water) in a flowing manner
  • depict busy street scenes devoid of people

A gray filter, also known as an ND (Neutral Density) filter, reduces the intensity of the light entering the camera. A high-quality NiSi gray filter reduces all wavelengths of light very evenly and thus prevents a color cast. A distinction is made between filter strengths from ND2 to ND 1000K, depending on the optical density of the filter. ND filters are often used to allow the photographer to use an open aperture or slow shutter speeds even in bright surroundings. For example, moving objects (e.g. water) can be depicted smoothly and moving objects can be eliminated, e.g. to depict busy street scenes devoid of people.
