New DJI Gimbals: DJI RS3 +amp; RS3 Pro

The big DJI RS launch!

In 2018, DJI launched the Ronin S, a compact one-handed gimbal that quickly replaced the previously popular Ronin M. The Ronin S was far from perfect, however, and barely two years later DJI followed up with the RS2 and RSC2. With new features, improved operation and significantly more power, the RS2 was a real announcement and even among professional filmmakers.

Now, another two years later, the RS series enters the next generation...

DJI RS3 - What's new?

Let's start small. The DJI RS3 is the new one-handed gimbal for solo camera operators who want to be as flexible and efficient as possible. It supports camera systems weighing up to 3kg, while weighing a light 1.3kg itself. So it's perfect for popular cameras like the Sony Alpha 7s III or a Canon EOS R5, each with a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens.

New here are some features that allow you to work quickly and effectively. The new dual-layer quick-release plate allows the camera to be quickly mounted on the gimbal. The new automatic axis lock locks or releases automatically when you turn the gimbal off/on, so you can get started right away.

Plus, of course, the most important thing, stabilization, has been improved. The 3rd generation RS stabilization algorithm ensures stable shots in every scenario and offers 20% more stability than its predecessor (DJI RSC2), according to the manufacturer.

With the new, larger 1.8" OLED touchscreen, all functions of the gimbal can be controlled comfortably via the thumb and with the front dial, camera functions, focus or even the zoom can be controlled (only with compatible cameras/lenses).

Also new is the battery grip, which now offers 12 hours of battery life and a quick charge function. In addition, the handle is smaller compared to the RSC 2 and can be charged independently of the gimbal.

DJI RS3 standard

  • DJI RS3
  • Automated axis locking
  • 3 kg tested payload
  • RS 3rd gen stabilization algorithm.
  • Bluetooth trigger button
  • 12 h max. battery life
  • 1.8ââ OLED touch screen

DJI RS3 Pro - What's New?

The RS3 Pro, unlike the RS3, is also aimed at cinema cameras. The gimbal carries up to 4.5 kg and also weighs only a light 1.5 kg. However, the load capacity was not necessarily the problem with the previous models, but rather the construction, which is why it is nice to see that DJI has reworked this and the RS3 Pro has now also been officially tested with a Canon EOS C70 and also a Sony Alpha FX6.

To make balancing easier, a knob has been added to the tilt axis for fine tuning, and some of the components are coated with Teflon for less frictional resistance. This makes mounting and balancing large and heavy cameras much easier.

We also have the 1.8" OLED touch display on the RS3 Pro, which is a full 28% larger than its predecessor. The OLED display technology also makes it much brighter while consuming less power.

There are new features here as well, including the "SuperSmooth" mode, which increases motor torque to further improve stabilization.

DJI Transmission

The new DJI Transmission brings professional video transmission to the RS 3 Pro, among others. The transmitter can be easily mounted under the camera and also powered via the gimbal. This allows radio transmissions (video and audio) at up to 6 km distance with extremely low latency and automatic frequency switching (between 2.4 GHz, 5.8 GHz and DFS frequencies).

The DJI Transmission comes with a radio monitor, which can receive the signal and with which you can receive multiple feeds at once.

DJI Transmission

  • DJI Transmission
  • seamless autom. frequency change
  • extremely low latency
  • 6 km (1080p/60fps transmission)
  • integrated radio receiver
  • Gimbal/focus/camera control
  • independent recording + playback

DJI LiDAR Focus

As with the Ronin 4D, a LiDAR focus system is now coming to the RS3 Pro. Through the rangefinder, 43,200 measurement points are projected within 14m to determine a focus point. In cooperation with the new DJI RS focus motor, focusing on the subject becomes much easier. The new focus motor now also offers three times more torque than its predecessor and reduces noise by approximately 50%.

In addition, with the new LiDAR sensor, tracking options have been added alongside professional autofocus features. With the new ActiveTrack Pro, instead of the Ronin video sensor (formerly known as RavenEye), the LiDAR sensor's camera can now do the tracking and pass this information to the gimbal as usual.

Autofocus takes a lot of the work out of photography; of course, there are also purists who like to focus manually.
