Great importance was attached to optimum lens construction to ensure excellent imaging performance. All 12 glass lenses are coated with Samyang's own Ultra Multi Coating UMC, which prevents reflections and therefore provides the image with more light. The coating also achieves better contrast and more brilliant color rendition. The reduction of reflections is also supported by a nano coating. Two of the 12 lenses are aspherical and thus ensure optimum correction of spherical image errors. In addition, one lens is made of ED glass (extra low dispersion), which also optimally corrects chromatic aberrations. The wide-angle lens is designed for system cameras and impresses with its extremely low weight and compact design. At the same time, the metal housing is very robust.
Using an APS-C lens on a camera with a full-frame sensor
Lenses developed for cameras with an APS-C sensor can sometimes also be used on cameras with a full-frame sensor (mainly using an adapter). Due to the significantly smaller image circle of APS-C Lens, the sensor area shows everything outside the image circle in black. The usable area of the image photographed with a full-frame camera therefore corresponds to that of a camera with an APS-C sensor and is correspondingly smaller. The images must therefore be cropped in post-processing. In the video sector, this method requires framing in post-production. The use of APS-C Lens on full-frame cameras is therefore possible, but not recommended.
Why the aperture is sometimes given in T
In photography, the abbreviation "f" is used for aperture (from "focal length"). The specified value indicates the ratio between the focal length and the entrance pupil on the Lens. In the film and video sector, on the other hand, the abbreviation "T" is used, which stands for "transmission". This value is calculated from the aperture f and the light loss in the respective Lens. It indicates the net brightness of the image that hits the sensor. This makes it possible to change the lens when filming: as long as the "T-Stop" is selected the same for both lenses, it is guaranteed that two shots filmed with different lenses of the same subject will be equally bright. This means that there are no jumps in brightness when the two shots are joined together in the edit.
The crop factor
The focal length of a Lens is always specified in relation to a full-frame sensor. The full-frame sensor has the same size as an image from 35 mm film. With smaller sensors in the cameras, for example APS-C or MFT, a smaller section of the image is used, which the Lens throws onto the sensor. This corresponds to a longer focal length. The crop factor indicates how much the focal length changes as a result. The image then shows the same section as if it had been taken by a full-frame camera at the corresponding focal length. Three common crop factors: APS-C for Nikon and Sony: 1.5 (100mm becomes 150mm), APS-C for Canon: 1.6 (100mm becomes 160mm), MFT: 2 (100mm becomes 200mm).
